About 10 million, one million and 100,000 people living altogether in Viet Nam, Cambodia and Laos were estimated to be carriers of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), respectively in 2005. However, very few epidemiological studies have been performed in the region to determine the prevalence of these viruses and their health impact. The HMU developed a proposal for a joint-study of “International epidemiological collaborative surveillance, epidemiology and prevention of HBV, HCV, HIV and rabies in the Greater Mekong Sub-region” in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health of Lao PDR and National Institute of Public Health of Cambodia. The study, with funding support provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Regional Pooled Fund of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Communicable Diseases Control Project (GMS CDC Project), was conducted in 12 hospitals in Viet Nam, 22 hospitals in Laos, and 17 hospitals in Cambodia. Mortality studies were conducted and the results presented for 64 province/city in Viet Nam, 12 of 17 provinces in Laos and 20 of 24 provinces in Cambodia.
