The HSPI developed a proposal for a joint-study of “HIV transmission in Vietnam-Lao PDR border areas: Current status and solutions” in collaboration with the Center for HIV/AIDS/STIs of the Department of Hygiene and Prevention, Ministry of Health of Lao PDR. The study aims to provide evidences for the effective implementation of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Prime Minister’s Decision 38/QĐ - TTg dated January 8, 2008 on “collaboration and cooperation in preventing cross border HIV transmission”. The study, with funding support provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Regional Pooled Fund of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region Communicable Diseases Control Project (GMS CDC Project), was conducted in six provinces located in the three pairs of international border entry points along the Vietnam-Lao PDR border, which include the paired border gates of Bo Y and Phu Cua of Kon Tum province (Vietnam) and Attapeu (Lao PDR) respectively, Cau Treo and Nam Phao of Ha Tinh (Vietnam) and Borikhamxay (Lao), and Tay Trang and Panghok of Dien Bien (Vietnam) and Phongsaly (Lao).Objectives: The study has three main objectives:
