The First Regional Workshop of the Second Regional GMS Communicable Diseases Control (CDC) Project was held in 29-30 November 2011 at the Don Chan Palace Hotel in Vientiane, Lao PDR. It was hosted and organized by the Lao Ministry of Health in coordination with the Regional Coordination Unit (RCU). The Vice Minister of Health of Lao PDR, Dr. Bounkouang Phichit, and Mr. Chong Chi Nai, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Lao PDR Resident Mission, both stressed the need to sustain regional cooperation in CDC in their opening speeches.

“In the spirit of Regional Cooperation, we should sustain together strong surveillance and response systems to control epidemics even across borders,” Vice Minister of Health Dr. Bounkouang Phichit said.

“ADB has been strongly committed to supporting this regional public good. We are pleased to note that with support of ADB, WHO, the World Bank, and other partners, major progress has been made in strengthening surveillance and response, in the control of dengue and other diseases, and in strengthening resilience of provincial health systems,” according to Mr. Chi Nai of ADB.

The Regional Workshop brought participants from Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam to present progress reports on the CDC II Project and discussed difficulties and solutions to project implementation. In addition, presentations on the Integration of CDC in the Model Healthy Village Project, Provincial Training Systems and Results-based Management provided fresh inputs on innovations in project implementation in CDC. A visit to a Model Healthy Village and technical discussions helped widen the perspective of the participants in further improving their project plans.

On the final day, the Regional Workshop was followed by the First Regional Steering Committee (RSC) Meeting of the CDC II. Strategies to enhance regional activities for CDC were discussed among the members of the RSC.
